West Bengal

A farmer with his bulls takes part in the 21st Bull Race at a paddy field in Canning village, in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal. Fifty-three farmers with 128 bulls from across the state, participated in the two-day long race. Winners will be rewarded with daily items such as bicycles, brass pitchers, radio sets, etc. Farmers also participate with the belief that taking part in the race before ploughing their fields will bring good rain and prosperity to their families, and also to encourage young people to take up farming, organisers said.

Vienna

Animal keeper Anton Geissenbacher holds a baby South American snapping turtle (Chelydra acutirostris) at Schoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna. Four of these snapping turtles, which originally lived in Costa Rica and Colombia, were hatched in July at the zoo marking the first time this species were bred in captivity.
