Toddlers killed in car crash named

Two children who died after their pushchairs were caught up in a car crash have been named by police.

A one-year-old boy, Oliwier Baczyk, of Leicester, died on Monday afternoon and a two-year-old girl, Zofia Tabaka, also of Leicester, died during the night, Leicestershire Police said.

Two pedestrians who were with the children at the time of the crash, both men aged 29 and 28, suffered minor injuries.

It is not yet clear how the children and adults came to be involved in the collision.

A 40-year-old woman and a 61-year-old man were arrested in connection with the incident, which happened at the junction of Narborough Road and Braunstone Gate in Leicester at 9.52am on Monday. They have since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said the accident involved a dark BMW and a red Mini Cooper.

Florist Anna Jadav, who runs Floral Fusion, a shop a few yards from the junction in Narborough Road, told the Leicester Mercury she was one of the first on the scene.

She said she heard an "almighty bang" while she was opening her shop. She told the newspaper: "I looked round and saw there had been accident between two cars. I ran over expecting to try to help some grown-ups, but was faced with two very little children lying on the road.

"It was a horrible sight and one I will never forget."

Police appealed for information to try to find out the exact circumstances of what happened. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Leicestershire Police on 101 or, alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
