Man drives himself to hospital after arm cut off

A man whose arm was cut off in an industrial accident managed to fish out the limb from machinery, and calmly drive 15 miles to hospital to ask doctors to reattach it.

Despite blood pouring from his wound, he stopped at traffic lights on his way from the recycling plant where the accident happened.

He also parked carefully before walking into the hospital, placing his arm on the reception desk and asking for help.

Doctors have suggested he only survived because he was in shock and on “autopilot” in Purbach, eastern Austria, reported the Metro website.

Police spokesman Walter Maier said: “It seems incredible but it’s a true story.

“His lower right arm was completely severed yet he managed to start the car and drive to the general hospital in Eisenstadt.”

The 37-year-old Hungarian man received emergency treatment but had to be flown by air ambulance to Vienna because the operation to reattach his limb was so complicated.

He will now have to wait to discover whether he will regain use of his hand.

The arm of the man – named only as Tibor A due to privacy rules – was severed while he cleaned a shaking screen used to sort building rubble.

Police will also be investigating why the worker had to drive himself to hospital and retrieve his arm.
