This tiny 1kg bundle of fur and teeth is the potential saviour of a critically endangered species of tiger. The male South China tiger cub was born at a reserve in South Africa's Free State 11 days ago and is the first to be bred outside China.
Conservationists are hailing it as a significant step forward in the battle to save the species from extinction. There are currently fewer than 100 such tigers left in China, only 30 of which live in the wild.
The cub, yet to be named, will be hand-reared and returned to his mother next month. In the meantime, his parents – Tiger Woods and Cathay – are learning how to hunt for their own food in the hope they can be eventually be sent back to China and set free.
