New coalition government gets underway with first cabinet meeting

David Cameron has held the first meeting of his new coalition cabinet.

Conservative and Liberal Democrat ministers made the unfamiliar journey to Downing Street to take their seats together.

Lib Dem Business Secretary Vince Cable arrived with his Tory deputy David Willetts and Defence Secretary Liam Fox, pausing briefly at the door of No 10 before going inside.

Following the meeting, Mr Cameron continued the business of filling the middle and junior ranks of his government, with a least one Lib Dem minister in each department.

The arrangement risks unsettling some of his own supporters, with the former shadow home secretary Chris Grayling among those without a place at the top table.

Along with Mr Cable and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, the new Cabinet features three other Lib Dems: Energy Secretary Chris Huhne, Treasury Chief Secretary David Laws and Scotland Secretary Danny Alexander.

Another 15 Lib Dems are expected to be appointed to the lower ranks of the government, creating even more pressure for places.
