The Big Lottery Fund, which distributes half the money raised for good causes by the National Lottery, said grants of up to £5,500 are available to pay travel and accommodation costs for the journeys to the battlefields.
Since its launch in April, the Fund's Heroes Return 2 programme has enabled more than 7,500 veterans, widows, spouses and carers to go on such trips.
More than £4.95 million has been given to date and the scheme is open until January 2011.
Many veterans have used grants to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy in June and to attend September's memorial events in Holland marking the anniversaries of Operation Market Garden, where almost 1,500 British airborne troops lost their lives.
Others have returned to places including Italy, Greece, Malta, India, the Far East and North Africa.
This is our mark of remembrance and respect for the sacrifice and dedication shown by Allied soliders.

I believe we should give every support to our fallen, and our men & women currently out in Afghanistan fighting to protect us here at home.
I am sad that many today chose to ignore the 2 minutes silence, whether through ignorance or due to their religious beliefs, which is sad, because our guys out there are fighting evil to protect the very faiths who choose to ignore this special day.
I think its time we all.....all threw all our support at our brave, brave Forces.
i wished and prayed never again. today we are no where near a solution to world peace. the left the right, the socialist and others, the self interest and the alliances all pulling in different directions.
the questions of who threw the first stone, the lies told to the never questioning loyal citizens, the nationalism, self serving interests, the jobs and the profits from military industry.. i know today is not the time when we remember our heroes, our brethren who gave their all for us. but when is this carnage going to end? not in my life time. and i fear the the future after..
In the past present and future, they all share the same bravery and courage used to defend our country and world.
I was at work today, wearing my poppy with pride me and my colleagues all stopped what we were doing and held the 2 minutes silence. my opinion , 2 minutes is not long enough !!
i'm not a government woman but if our troops where not over their the taliban would be over here and the lives of everyone man woman & child would be at risk because there not bother who they maim & kill
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
they go where their sent
I too wore my poppy with pride today, and did 2 mintes silence, I agree with 'Black Sabbath mad' it's not enough!
I dont agree with the ignorant morans who think the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are pointless.. have you notice you can walk down the street without getting shot at?! They are fighting to stop terrorist attacks among other things... Yes we should always remember the heroes of WW1 and WW2 and we WILL remember them..
Unfortunately it's easy for poeple like 'Dr_Chris' to contemplate how wonderful their lives may be and not give a second thought to the lads that are out there and what they feel! You may think that by saying 'Get them home' you're helping but you're not, it's an insult, you're basically saying they're risking their lives and losing their friends for nothing... Nobody wants to hear that the job they're doing isn't worthwhile
So to the ignorant people of our nation - think before you speak and have some respect for our boys!!!
get troops out now and stop fighting for the jews let them
fight ere own battles it does not concern us
the taliban were no threat to us until we felt obliged to help the american and israelis because this country
borrows vast amounts of money to keep us ticking over
this country is poor FACT we cant even kit the troops
properly. HITLER SEEN THIS COMING AND TRIED TO STOP
THIS VILE DISEASE(JEWS) FOR TAKING OVER THE WORLD
AND NOW WE ARE PAYING THE PRICE .
