A 24-year-old construction worker in Brazil survived after a 6ft metal bar fell from above and pierced his head, doctors said.

Luiz Alexandre Essinger, chief of staff of Rio de Janeiro's Miguel Couto Hospital, said doctors successfully withdrew the iron bar from Eduardo Leite's skull during a five-hour surgery.

"He was taken to the operating room, his skull was opened, they examined the brain and the surgeon decided to pull the metal bar out from the front in the same direction it entered the brain," Mr Essinger said.

Rescue workers neared the end of the search for survivors and the dead in the Oklahoma City suburb where a mammoth tornado destroyed countless homes, cleared areas down to bare earth and claimed 24 lives, including nine children

Nottinghamshire Police said ongoing searches in the rubble of the property in Newark had "revealed" the body of a woman, which will be recovered later on Monday.

Ten people were arrested after the rioting in the Israeli holy city, while eight officers were reported to have been injured in the clashes, two of them seriously.
