The christening of Prince George on 23 October 2013 will be commemorated by an official photograph.

It will be the first time the new royal baby has been captured on camera together with members of his wider family.

Royal christenings have been marked with photographs dating back almost 100 years. This gallery contains a selection of them, beginning with this picture taken on 1 May 1926 of the Queen Mother, then the Duchess of York, with her husband, the future King George VI, then the Duke of York. They are holding their newly-christened daughter Princess Elizabeth: the future Queen Elizabeth II.

Princess Elizabeth: 29 April 1926

Princess Elizabeth was christened at Buckingham Palace. Prince Charles: 15 December 1948

Princess Elizabeth's first child was christened Prince Charles Philip Arthur George of Edinburgh. This picture shows four generations of the royal family. Sitting next to Princess Elizabeth, who holds Prince Charles, is her grandmother, the Dowager Queen Mary. Standing behind the group is King George VI.

Prince Charles: 15 December 1948

The top tier of Princess Elizabeth's wedding cake was used for the official cake for the christening of Prince Charles. McVitie & Price made the wedding cake with a silver cradle, which held a miniature doll dressed in christening robes, pelisse and bonnet designed by the Royal School of Needlework.

Princess Anne: 21 October 1950

The second child of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh was christened Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise. The ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace. This picture shows members of the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother), and - running out of shot - the young Prince Charles.

King George VI reaches out with a friendly pat for his granddaughter, Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise, on the day of her christening at Buckingham Palace. Holding the baby is her mother Princess Elizabeth, and in the centre is the baby's aunt, Princess Margaret. Anne wore the royal robe of Honiton lace, handed down from the time of Queen Victoria in the 19th century.

Prince Harry: 27 December 1984

The second child of the Prince of Wales and Princess Diana was christened at Windsor Castle by the Archbishop of Canterbury. It was the first royal christening in the chapel since Queen Victoria's grandson, Prince Leopold of Battenburg, was baptised there in 1889.
