Tributes to cult singer Buckley
Buckley was a classic what-if rock story.
The son of another cult songwriter, Tim Buckley, Jeff was a jobbing musician until he signed for Columbia and recorded his one - and only - studio album Grace.
His distinctive high-pitched voice and sensitive songs made him stand out from the classic rock acts, and there were high hopes for
his second album which he was rehearsing while waiting for his band to arrive.
Tragically he drowned during a spontaneous evening swim — fully clothed — in a river, when he was caught in the wake of a passing
boat. His body was found on June 4, 1997.
Buckley remains popular with indie rock fans and Grace is regularly featured in 'greatest' lists in the music press. There have been a few attempts to make a film about Buckley but so far none have materialised.
