Chupacabra

The head of what some people thought was a Chupacabra, whose name means 'goat sucker', after its fondness for livestock. Descriptions of this unlikely Mexican monster vary, from dog-like to reptilian.

The dead animal pictured above was discovered by a local resident in Cuero, Texas who believed it was responsible for killing many of her chickens.

Later results discovered that it was unlikely to be the mythical bloodsucking chupacabra but just a plain old coyote.

Tasmanian tiger

Declared extinct by scientists in 1936, the Tasmanian tiger, also known as the Thylacine, is thought by Cryptozoologists to still exist.

Pictured above is a photo of a Tasmanian tiger on display at the Australian Museum in Sydney. Since its declared extinction there have been more than 60 reported sightings of the Tasmanian Tiger in Victoria with 20 sightings recorded in the Warrandyte State Park, only 25 kilometres (16 miles) from the heart of Melbourne.

Loch Ness Monster

This shadowy something is what someone says is a photo of the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland taken in 1934. The first modern sighting of the 'monster' was the previous year, 1933, and has generated world-wide interest.

Giant Snake

Pictured above is a giant 15-metre long python curled up inside a cage at Curugsewu recreational Park in Indonesia. A creature that would be easy to mistake for a monster.

The 15-metre (49.21 feet) long, 447-kilogram (985 pound) snake was captured in Jambi province in Sumatera island in 2002 and is the largest snake ever kept in captivity.

North American Ape

Many people claim to have seen monsters or unrecorded species. Pictured above is a sketch of a North American Ape as spotted in Northeastern Washington State, near the Canadian Border, by a member of the unknown animals website, www.cryptozoology.com.

Mothman

Mothman is a man-sized creature with wings and glowing eyes. It was first sighted in 1966 and later featured in the film The Mothman Prophecies.

Pictured above is a large Mothman sculpture which stands along Main Street in Point Pleasant in the USA. Residents there have embraced the legend of the mysterious creature later dubbed 'Mothman', helping to turn the town into a destination for people in search of an offbeat tourism experience.

Mermaid

The mermaid is an unlikely cryptid (not necessarily a monster, but all unknown animals are given this classification). It was, for a long time, believed to be very real. In 1785 The Times reported a mermaid sighting with a description.

Chimaera

The Chimaera is a fabled fire-breathing monster of Greek mythology, with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail (or according to others with the heads of a lion, a goat, and a serpent). This one pictured above is an Arctic Chimaera - it doesn't look quite as scary.
