The pregnant royal will spend her birthday on Wednesday 9 January away from the public eye, according to St James’s Palace.

It’s been reported that Kate is hoping to celebrate with a small family meal and spend time with Prince William on what will be her last birthday before the arrival of their first child.

“Wills and the Middleton family are planning a very quiet do, but there'll be a 'surprise element', which could be one of two things," according to a source quoted on the Marie Claire website.

“They'll arrange a very small lunch with present openings if she's feeling up to it. Or, they'll throw a big family dinner in the evening.

“She'll just want to be with her family and enjoy her last birthday with Wills before there's a little one to look after.

“And it seems Kate is just looking forward to spending her birthday with her family before she gets to grip with motherhood.”

It also quoted a source that Prince William is property hunting to find a place to allow the couple to “get away from it all”, potentially in Hampshire or Buckinghamshire for around the £5 million mark – and that he could present the details to his wife on her birthday.

A St James’s Palace spokesman said: “There are no public engagements on her birthday. She will be spending the day privately.”

In a separate development, a Tardis-like police box is set to be built close to the gates of Kensington Palace in London.

It is being constructed to improve security for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who are set to move into Princess Margaret’s former apartment following a £1 million renovation reported the London Evening Standard.
