The Oxford and Cambridge University rowing teams took to the Thames on Saturday, 3 April to battle it out on the water in the annual boat race. A tradition since 1829, the epic encounter came with the normal pomp, ceremony and a healthy dose of rivalry between these two highly-respected Universities.

Although Oxford were the favourites to take the title for the third year in a row, Cambridge surprised the spectators lining the riverside and came from behind to win the race by one-and-a-half lengths in 17 minutes and 35 seconds.

Despite Oxford winning the toss and choosing to race on the favoured southern side of the river, the team couldn't hold onto their strong start and looked in trouble as Cambridge caught up in the second half. The victory marked only the second time that a crew has come from being behind at Barnes Bridge to win.
"Our plan was to choose Surrey so it was probably better that we lost the toss. We proved that we were a tough crew out there," admitted Cambridge president, Deaglan McEachern.
Crew member Rob Weitemeyer added: "We really focused hard on the second half of the race. It's easy to overcook the goose in the first three kilometres.
"We really worked on using economy and making the best of our power and knowing that we would come through in the end."

The celebrations were well-deserved for Cambridge: the university now leads in the overall rankings by 80 wins to 75, with one dead heat.
MSN UK's Creative Solutions team went along to the riverside to capture all of the action as it happened, with the new Lumix TZ10. View photos from the day and experience some of the race for yourself in 360 degrees with our photosynth of the event.
